Obasanjo inaugurates 7billion litre Capacity Dam at FUNAAB


 Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday inaugurated a 7 billion litre Capacity Dam at the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB) Abeokuta.

The Dam which is situated about 20 kilometres away from the campus, would serve the campus including hostels, offices, and other facilities.

Obasanjo, represented by his son Dr. Seun Obasanjo , commended the Vice Chancellor of the University , Prof. Kolawole Salako for the laudable project.

The former president stated that other institutions and communities should emulate such gesture, saying it would make the nation to develop faster .

"If each institution and each community are doing this kind of projects, the nation will develop a lot faster.

"One of the nations developmental  goal is the provisions of clean water and that is what this project will achieve. 

"Even in this community , it will touch a lot of lives , so therefore it is my own honour , I am happy to be here to commission this project and am happy the institution is moving forward," he said.

Obasanjo explained that he would be willing to work continuously with the institution and the community to see how he could bring more development to the axis.

"Even if it means partnering for the electricity generation, we can have a public private partnership arrangements , I'm ready to serve and I am ready to  join with this community," he said.

Earlier, the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR, was among the dignitaries who praised Professor Kolawole Felix Salako, the outgoing vice chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB), Abeokuta, Ogun state, for the monumental projects that were made possible under his leadership over the past five years. They called Salako a dependable, tenacious, and resilient academia.

Alake while commissioning the newly constructed 300-seater Senate building extension on Thursday at the University’s premises, said he was not surprised by the performance of Professor Salako, saying his performance typifies true Egba character as an achiever.

The highly esteemed monarch gave the incoming vice chancellor a challenge to build on the accomplishments of the departing VC. The monarch visited the campus to see the millennium projects built by Prof. Salako

Similarly, the Agura of Gbaguraland, Oba Babajide Bakre described Professor Salako as a successful man who has impacted in both learning and moral of the students with the provision of modern lecture facilities.

The Agura who was represented by Bashorun Festus Kehinde said Agura is very proud of you. God has made you "Alaseyori", the land you have touched you always turn them to fertile land. I’m not surprised with your track record, because you have worked with another Mr. Project in person of Prof. Olaiya Balogun. Looking at the content of your character to make a difference in peoples lives, that makes you a successful person. The entire Egbaland is proud of you.”

Oba Babajide, therefore, commissioned the Academic building complex Block A and Block B.
Other projects commissioned included the ultra modern Sports Grand stand by former lecturer of the University, Professor Olusegun Ayodele Osinowo, College of Physical sciences building commissioned by Professor Ishola Adamson, Academic Maintenance building by Chief Kola Jamodu,  the newly built University’s Maternity Clinic and X-ray building by the Chief Medical Director, Federal Medical Centre, Prof. Adewale Musa Olomu and the Palm oil Processing factory done by Professor Segun Lagoke.

Speaking shortly after commissioning the Maternity centre, the FMC CMD, Prof. Musa-Olomu said construction of the maternity clinic would improve the living condition of Alabata residents and the university community.

He said “For his belief that the University should provide medical services to the Alabata community, it is one of its kind in the University in the country. It shows the future of our campus universities will be great if our VC can work like this. I am really impressed. The synergy between FMC and FUNAAB is the medical relationship of 50% discount for students and staff of the University in our hospital.”

Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Felix Salako said his administration decided to construct the senate building extension to accommodate the 300 Senate members and administrative staff.

He said the construction of Senate building extension which started in 2019 was completed in 2022, saying all projects commissioned by the administration were painted green to symbolize productivity and agriculture.

On the construction of the Sports complex Grand Stand, Prof. Salako explained that the sports complex will make the youths to be more committed in extracurricular activities than engage in social vices.
