Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has expressed his outrage over the mistreatment and delays faced by the Nigerian squad at the Libyan airport ahead of their crucial clash in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The players and officials, who traveled for the return leg of their AFCON match, were left stranded without food or proper care, highlighting a distressing situation.
Though not with the squad, Osimhen took to his Instagram story to voice his concerns about the team's ordeal. He criticized the Libyan government's actions, stating that the situation has escalated beyond mere delays to what he perceives as intentional tactics aimed at undermining the players’ spirits.
“This attempt by the Libyan FA is no longer just a delay; it’s an intentional tactic to weaken and ruin the morale of the players. It’s starting to resemble a hostage situation,” he wrote. Emphasizing the importance of his teammates' safety, he added, “Our captain has declared that we won’t play unless the match is moved to a neutral ground. My brothers and coaches must return home safely; we are not criminals or prisoners.”
Osimhen also reflected on the emotional toll this ordeal takes on the team, recalling a similar experience from his Under-17 days. “I can only imagine how terrible they must feel right now. This is completely unfair and heartbreaking,” he lamented.
He urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Nigerian government, and other relevant authorities to act swiftly to ensure the team’s safe return home.
