As part of the activities lined up for the Workers Day Celebration which comes up on May 1, 2023,the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC)empowered eight indigent widows with cash gift to support them.
The chairman of the council, Comrade Isa Olude tasked the beneficiaries to prudently utilize the gift towards the payment of their children school fees, or purchase of academic materials.
In his words " we believe that we can give back to the society , so this widows were invited today and we presented cheque of about N50,000 to them to serve as token from JNC, as part of our May Day activity. "
The chairman urged the widows to remain focus,dedicate themselves to the service of God, be prayerful and ensure that they are able to train their children.
"They should not loose hope, because God can solve every problem.
"What makes me to be happy today is that , this cheques are coming at the time of the resumption of children for another academic program , there's no way this financial commitment from JNC wouldn't impact the payment of school fees, or purchase of academic materials for the children .
" Meanwhile, we will monitor them because they're members of individual unions . We'll be calling on them to ensure that the little we are able to give is committed to the development of their children ."
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist(NUJ) Ogun State chapter, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju commended the organizers of the event for reaching out to the widows.
He said " We have realised that many of dear comrades that fought relentlessly for the right of Nigerian workers have died, their wives and children are suffering.
"But what we are seeing today has actually touched all of us , that is very important to look and dig out some people we can help."
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Ogun State chapter, Comrade Hammed Benco Ademola urged young widows to remarry and try as much as possible to nurture their children.
He therefore advised them to use the empowerment judiciously for the betterment of their children.
