Ogun Assembly Faces Crisis Over Speakership race

The Ogun State House of Assembly is currently embroiled in a deep crisis over the emergence of a new Speaker, leading to the postponement of the 10th Assembly's inauguration from Tuesday, 13 June 2023, to Tuesday, 20th June 2023.

An insider in the house, who claimed anyonimity revealed that majority of the house of assembly-elects are not in support of Oluomo because of his case with EFCC.

Oxygist gathered that the immediate past Speaker, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, who sought re-election for a second term, is facing strong opposition from Hon. Daisi Elemide, who is also vying for the Speakership position.

Our correspondent also gathered that the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun is in support of Olakunle Oluomo to return as the speaker of the House of Assembly  and Hon. Lateefat Ajayi , who is representing Egbado South Constituency to be the Deputy speaker of the house of assembly.

Hon. Oluomo, a member of the APC representing Ifo Constituency 1, is returning to the Assembly for a fourth term, while Hon. Elemide, also an APC member representing Odeda Constituency, is returning for a third term.

Amidst the internal crisis, the nine PDP Members-Elect of the Ogun State House of Assembly have vowed to oppose the emergence of Hon. Oluomo as Speaker due to the moral burden he carries as a result of his case with the EFCC.

The APC holds seventeen seats in the Assembly.

It is worth mentioning that Hon. Elemide previously contested against Hon. Oluomo for the Speakership position in 2019 but was unsuccessful.
