A tragic accident claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Thursday, August 15, along the Nteje-Umueri junction by the Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State. The fatal crash involved a fully loaded commercial Mercedes Tipper with registration number XA158ZT and a motorcycle without a registration number.
The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., was reportedly caused by wrongful overtaking. According to eyewitnesses, the motorcyclist attempted to overtake the tipper but lost control, leading to a fatal collision.
Residents of the Nteje area have expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents in this stretch of the busy expressway, which has sadly become notorious for such tragedies.
Margaret Onabe, the acting Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), confirmed the accident, stating that the deceased's body has been handed over to his family in the Aguleri community.
In response to the accident, the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra State, Joyce Nnenaya Alexander, extended her condolences to the bereaved family. She also urged motorists to exercise caution, ensuring the road is clear before overtaking, and to remain fully attentive to their surroundings while driving.
