Popular Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu, has refuted claims that she is involved in an alleged plan to bring down controversial social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The accusations surfaced after Aisha supported the Falana family, who demanded a retraction and apology from VDM over his commentary on a purported audio involving crossdresser Bobrisky. In the leaked audio, Bobrisky allegedly claimed that Falz, the Nigerian musician and son of human rights lawyer Femi Falana, offered a 10 million naira deal to secure a presidential pardon.
VDM expressed shock that the Falanas would be associated with Bobrisky, making a controversial remark, which some interpreted as a question about Falz’s sexual orientation. In response, the Falanas announced plans to take legal action.
Aisha had earlier commented that if the Falanas did not address the situation, it could be perceived as guilt regarding the allegations in the audio. Her stance drew criticism, with some Nigerians accusing her of conspiring with the Falanas to discredit VDM.
Responding to the accusations on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, Aisha strongly denied any intent to tarnish VDM’s reputation, stating that no one has the right to destroy someone’s hard-earned name. She expressed her views on the situation, writing:
"I've just seen an accusation that my only interest is to bring VDM down. As if I want to take over his work or help people on his behalf? I've repeatedly said I don't want to help people; I just want them to not need my help in the first place. That way, I can stay lazy!Regardless, whether someone is advocating for others or not, it doesn't give anyone the right to tarnish someone else's reputation. And having a well-known name doesn’t mean you shouldn’t defend yourself when someone tries to drag it through the mud. That 'be the bigger person' nonsense has to stop!"
