Ademola Lookman Honored as Only African on Ballon d’Or Shortlist-OXYGIST

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed excitement over being the sole African footballer shortlisted for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The Atalanta striker, who made history by becoming the first player since 1975 to score a hat-trick in a European final, was instrumental in Atalanta's Europa League victory against Bayer Leverkusen.

Reflecting on this milestone, Lookman shared with BBC Sport Africa, “It’s a special feeling to be on the list, and even more so to represent Africa.” At just 27, he’s already achieved memorable highlights in both his club and international career, which he considers a major accomplishment.

Discussing his unforgettable hat-trick in the Europa League final, Lookman recalled, “That night was special. The way we won, especially against a strong Leverkusen team, was incredible. Moments like that are what every player dreams of.” He added that stepping out of his comfort zone has been key to his growth, saying, “I’m constantly learning, pushing myself to be better—not only as a player but as a person.”

Lookman’s stellar performances have also placed him as a frontrunner for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he’s up against nine other nominees, including fellow Nigerian William Troost-Ekong.
