Breaking: Multiple Fatalities Reported in Deadly Shootings in Anambra's Capital-OXYGIST

A tragic shooting spree on Thursday morning in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, has reportedly left several people dead.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 9:15 a.m. in the Ifite Awka area, a neighborhood heavily populated by students from Nnamdi Azikiwe University. One student witness suggested the violence may be linked to cult-related activities.

This shocking event follows a similar deadly shooting last Sunday, in which at least 12 people were killed in nearby Nibo, also suspected to be cult-related.

Another source detailed that Thursday’s attack took place near the back gate of Unizik, Awka, close to Amansea Road. "Gunmen just shot a guy a few minutes ago at Ifite, Awka. He’s lying lifeless," one witness recounted. A university lecturer, who was on her way to campus, reported seeing seven lifeless bodies, prompting her to abandon her journey.

While the exact number of victims remains unclear, Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that a police response team has secured the area. Further updates are expected soon.

In a related development, Ikenga mentioned in a press statement that the police had intercepted disturbing videos and voice notes circulating on social media, hinting at plans for further violence in the region. The Anambra State Police Command is treating these threats seriously, intensifying patrols and surveillance to maintain public safety and prevent any further escalation of violence.

Police and security forces are committed to ensuring law and order, and are working to protect the fundamental rights of residents across the state. Further information regarding the situation will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
