The Edo State government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has given Governor-elect Senator Monday Okpebholo a 48-hour deadline to back up his allegations of looting and vandalism against the administration or issue a public apology.
Okpebholo recently raised concerns about alleged dubious loan deals and the misappropriation of government assets by outgoing officials. With the transition of power just weeks away, he urged banks and financial institutions to halt any loan approvals for the current government.
In a statement released by Crusoe Osagie, the Special Adviser on Media Projects to the Edo State Governor, the government challenged Okpebholo to provide the names of banks from which loans have allegedly been taken in the past three months or any other evidence supporting his claims.
Osagie stated, “We are giving Senator Monday Okpebholo a 48-hour ultimatum to present verifiable proof of his claims that government officials are looting and vandalizing state assets. These unfounded allegations are serious, and we demand credible evidence to substantiate them.”
He emphasized that governance in Edo State is a serious matter, saying, “The office of the Governor is not a platform for frivolous claims. If Okpebholo fails to provide evidence within the stipulated time, he must issue an unreserved apology to the state government.”
