The Nigerian Army has reacted to the tragic incident involving a soldier who fatally stabbed a police officer during a traffic-related altercation in Lagos on October 9, 2024. The army confirmed the incident, expressing deep regret over the unfortunate turn of events.
The altercation reportedly occurred around the Volks Bus Stop in Ojo, Lagos, where soldiers from the Ojo Cantonment Barracks, led by an unidentified colleague, were confronted by police officers for allegedly violating traffic regulations. During the confrontation, the soldier stabbed Police Constable Saka Ganiyu, resulting in his death.
In an official statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, the Nigerian Army expressed sorrow over the incident. The statement reads:
"81 Division Nigerian Army regrets to inform the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred on 9 October 2024, involving a soldier and a police officer following an altercation related to an alleged traffic violation. The soldier suspected to have committed the offence has been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and further disciplinary action."
The army emphasized that such actions are contrary to the Nigerian Army’s Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. It also reiterated its commitment to maintaining good relations with other security agencies and the public, ensuring that its personnel avoid behaviors that could damage its reputation.
The General Officer Commanding 81 Division extended his condolences to the family of the deceased officer and the Nigerian Police, promising a thorough investigation and appropriate measures to ensure justice is served. The statement reassured the public that the Nigerian Army remains dedicated to upholding its constitutional duty to protect lives and property in collaboration with other security agencies.
