A devastating accident on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway late Tuesday night has claimed the lives of 10 people, including three children, while three others sustained serious injuries. The tragic incident took place around 11 p.m. in the Abule Osun area of Lagos State.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the heartbreaking details in a statement released on Wednesday.
According to the report, the accident involved a Toyota Sienna, which crashed into a stationary truck loaded with granite that had been parked along the road, occupying a large portion of the expressway.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the speeding Siena driver failed to spot the parked truck in time, resulting in the collision. The statement from LASEMA read:
“Upon arriving at the scene of the accident near Abule Osun, heading towards Iyana Iba, it was discovered that a Toyota Sienna, fully loaded with passengers, had collided with a stationary SHACMAN truck. The truck was parked on the road and took up nearly half of the carriageway, while the Siena, traveling at high speed, crashed into it from behind.”
Sadly, the accident claimed 10 lives, including three male adults, four female adults, two female children, and one male child. Three others, including a female adult and two children, were critically injured and rushed to the hospital by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel before LASEMA’s arrival.
“The deceased have been bagged, awaiting evacuation by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu added.
The crashed Siena was later towed to the FRSC station by LASEMA's tow truck. The incident has left the community reeling, as investigations continue into what led to the tragic loss of lives.
