The Nigerian Senate has called on state and local governments to promptly comply with the Supreme Court's ruling regarding local government accounts and the direct allocation of funds to them.
In a bid to strengthen local governance, the Senate also announced plans to amend sections of the Constitution to grant full autonomy to local government administrations across the country.
The announcement was made by Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau, following a closed-door session where lawmakers discussed ongoing attempts by some state governments to bypass the Supreme Court's July 11 ruling on the matter. The Senate has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring local governments receive the autonomy they need to function effectively.
