Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has announced that N18 billion in compensation will be paid to property owners impacted by the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, an increase from the initial N8 billion initially allocated for the first phase. Speaking in Lagos on Sunday, November 3, Umahi emphasized the Tinubu administration’s commitment to ensuring fair and transparent compensation for affected citizens.
During a stakeholder meeting, Umahi disclosed that half of the N18 billion compensation has already been disbursed, with each payment verified by independent experts to ensure accuracy and fairness. He assured attendees that the remaining compensation would be settled within 10 days.
Akin Alabi, chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, commended the Ministry of Works for its transparency and proactive stakeholder engagement. He also highlighted the importance of publishing detailed compensation records to prevent misinformation and boost accountability.
“There are mischief makers out there, but once these details are publicly available, it will foster clarity and discourage misleading claims,” Alabi said, underscoring the government’s dedication to transparency and fairness.
