Maimuna Gawu, a resident of Gawu Babangida in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, recounted a harrowing ordeal in which she escaped from a kidnappers' den just hours after giving birth to twin boys. Her abductors, however, refused to release her newborns, claiming the babies belonged to them.
Maimuna’s ordeal began after she visited the Suleja General Hospital for a routine antenatal checkup. Following her appointment, she boarded a Sharon bus at the hospital gate, unaware that her journey home would turn into a nightmare.
“I had gone to check on my baby because I wasn’t feeling any movement. The doctor confirmed I was due for delivery the following day and asked me to return. On my way back, I boarded a bus heading to Lambata. I told the driver where I wanted to alight, but shortly after, I lost consciousness,” Maimuna shared on Tsalle Daya, a Hausa program on Prestige FM Minna.
Maimuna woke up in an unfamiliar house around 1 a.m. with a drip attached to her arm. In labor, she delivered twin boys in the presence of a young man and an elderly woman. Exhausted, she drifted in and out of consciousness.
The following morning, she discovered her captors had taken her babies. “When I asked for my babies, another woman told me they weren’t mine, insisting they belonged to them. I begged and cried, but they refused to give them back,” she said.
As darkness fell, her captors removed her drip and informed her they had a meeting with their leader. Taking advantage of their absence, Maimuna made a daring escape. She eventually found herself in Kagara, Rafi Local Government Area, where she sought help.
