A tragic incident unfolded on November 1, 2024, when a commercial driver named Kamtochukwu was reportedly shot and killed by a police officer attached to the Otuocha Area Command in Anambra East Local Government Area, Anambra State. The confrontation allegedly arose over a N100 bribe at a police checkpoint.
Eyewitnesses report that the altercation occurred when Kamtochukwu, along with other drivers, encountered a police squad led by an officer named Onyebuchi. A source close to the scene explained that tensions escalated when one of the officers drew his weapon during the dispute and fatally shot the driver.
"The young man was shot during a disagreement with the officers over a N100 bribe," stated a fellow commercial driver who witnessed the incident. "Kamtochukwu’s vehicle was right in front of mine, and as we waited in line at the checkpoint, we suddenly heard a gunshot."
The shooting sparked chaos, with local youths mobilizing in protest against the police before the officers hurriedly left the scene.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that Inspector Sani Suleiman, the officer responsible, has been identified, disarmed, and taken into custody pending further investigation and disciplinary action.
