Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has shed light on his now-famous six-finger gesture directed at Liverpool fans during City’s 2-0 loss at Anfield.
The moment unfolded as Liverpool supporters taunted Guardiola with chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning,” mocking City’s ongoing winless streak, which has now stretched to seven matches.
In response, Guardiola raised six fingers to the crowd, later explaining it was a nod to his six Premier League titles with Manchester City.
“I’m incredibly proud of my six Premier League wins against teams like Liverpool and others,” he said. “I didn’t expect Anfield to start chanting about me being sacked at 0-2. Maybe our results haven’t been great, but I’m still here because of what we’ve achieved.”
Despite the jabs from Liverpool fans, Guardiola maintained his composure and humor. “When you win, you smile. When you lose, you still smile,” he quipped.
Currently sitting fifth in the Premier League table, Manchester City is far from their usual commanding form. However, Guardiola remains optimistic as his team prepares for a vital home clash against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Liverpool continues to set the pace, now sitting nine points clear at the top of the table. Their next test comes against Newcastle on the same night, as the race for the Premier League crown heats up.
