Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has proposed a ₦605 billion budget for the 2025 fiscal year, presenting it to the State House of Assembly on Tuesday. The proposed budget, tagged the “Budget of Renewed Hope for a Rising Edo”, represents a 25% increase from the 2024 budget.
According to a statement from Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the budget comprises ₦223 billion (37%) for recurrent expenditure and ₦381 billion (63%) for capital projects.
Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the budget reflects wide-ranging consultations and is designed to enhance accountability, transparency, and responsive service delivery. Addressing the Assembly, he said,
“With gratitude to God and a sense of responsibility, I present the 2025 Appropriation Bill, containing the revenue and expenditure plans for the fiscal year. This budget supports my administration’s five-point agenda: Security, Infrastructure Development, Healthcare, Food Sufficiency, and Education.”
The budget also aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, incorporated into Edo State’s Development Plan for 2025.
The Governor allocated ₦162 billion for road infrastructure, aiming to transform the state’s connectivity. He noted,
“Connecting communities with motorable roads is crucial for rapid economic growth. We will improve the roads that make Edo the gateway to other regions and modernize Benin City.”
Recognizing the deplorable state of the education sector, the administration has allocated ₦48 billion to revamp schools at all levels. Governor Okpebholo announced a monthly ₦500 million subvention to Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma, to restore its status and improve other tertiary institutions.
With ₦63.9 billion set aside for healthcare, the government plans to enhance accessibility and affordability. A further ₦1.8 billion has been allocated to health insurance initiatives.
The administration will strengthen the agricultural sector with ₦4.5 billion earmarked for farm mechanization and farmer security. This investment aims to boost food production, create jobs, and ensure safe farmlands.
Governor Okpebholo highlighted plans to foster peace and harmony across the state. Twenty patrol vehicles have already been acquired to bolster security efforts, with more to be purchased in 2025. The administration has also lifted the ban on Edo State Vigilante activities to enhance community safety.
The Governor reiterated his commitment to improving the socio-economic conditions of Edo residents. He concluded by thanking the Speaker and Assembly members for their continued cooperation, stating,
“This budget reflects our determination to resolve hostilities between communities, revitalize critical sectors, and ensure a brighter future for all.”
