The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Zamfara State Command, has arrested a man, Mohammed Dauda Ismail, for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit currency totaling $7,000.
Addressing journalists at the Command Headquarters in Gusau, the state capital, the Commandant, Sani Mustapha, shared details of the arrest. He explained that the case began on December 12, 2024, when a 33-year-old man, Alkasim Kabir, from Kano State, reported the theft of his Mercedes-Benz C300 (registration number DAL 68 HK Kano), along with a Samsung Galaxy phone and an iPhone 12.
According to the Commandant, the suspects traveled along the Dayi-Malumfashi-Funtua route en route to Zamfara State from Kano State. Acting on intelligence and a social media alert, NSCDC operatives were able to track down and apprehend Mohammed Dauda on Sunday, December 15, 2024. He was arrested around 11:30 a.m. at a restaurant near Masjid Umar Bin Khattab on Sokoto Bypass Road in Gusau.
During interrogation, Dauda admitted to obtaining the stolen items through deception. He revealed that he absconded with the car and phones under the pretext of refueling the vehicle at a gas station in Kano. The Command further disclosed that the stolen iPhone 12 had been traced to Lokoja, Kogi State. Efforts are underway to recover the phone, with the buyer reportedly agreeing to return it to its rightful owner.
Commandant Mustapha assured the public that thorough investigations were ongoing and confirmed that the suspect would face prosecution upon the completion of the inquiry.
Speaking to reporters, the suspect, Mohammed Dauda, confessed that his attempts to sell the stolen car and phones were unsuccessful due to his inability to provide the car’s registration documents.
