Germany Calls Trump’s Panama Canal Remarks "Unacceptable"-OXYGIST

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent declaration to reclaim the Panama Canal, labeling his remarks as "unacceptable." Trump reiterated his controversial stance during his inaugural address, sparking international reactions.

Baerbock expressed particular concern over Trump’s assertion about controlling Greenland, an autonomous territory of NATO ally Denmark. Speaking to German broadcaster RBB on Tuesday, January 21, she stated, "Any threat against a NATO member or other states is, of course, completely unacceptable."

The German Foreign Minister emphasized the need for a measured response to Trump’s comments, advocating for a deeper understanding of his motivations.

“It’s not about how President Trump says something… but we should look at why he says something,” she explained. “The focus should be on what interests are behind [Trump’s statements]… and then standing up for our own interests.”

Baerbock suggested that Trump’s rhetoric on the Panama Canal might stem from concerns about China’s expanding influence in global trade and infrastructure. Trump alleged during his speech that China was effectively "operating" the canal, a critical trade route transferred to Panama by the U.S. in 1999. He declared, “We didn’t give it to China, we gave it to Panama. And we’re taking it back.”

This is not the first time Trump has expressed a desire to regain control over the canal, with past statements even hinting at potential military action. His comments have reignited debates about U.S. foreign policy and its approach to China’s growing presence in global trade.

Despite the tensions, Baerbock reaffirmed the importance of the U.S.-Germany alliance. “The USA is one of our most important allies. We want to and will continue to work closely together,” she said, while also emphasizing Germany’s efforts to strengthen its own strategic autonomy.
