The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has granted bail to Naomi Silekunola, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, along with Oriyomi Hamzat and the principal of the school involved in a tragic stampede. Justice K.B. Olawoyin issued the ruling after hearing a bail application filed by the defendants’ legal counsel.
The court set five strict conditions for their release:
. Each defendant must provide N10 million as bail bond.
. Two sureties are required, each submitting documents of landed property within the court's jurisdiction.
. The defendants must surrender their international passports to the court.
. They are prohibited from granting interviews or making public statements related to the case while it is ongoing.
. Oriyomi Hamzat’s media organization is barred from broadcasting news about the case.
Earlier, the Oyo State Government had filed an 18-count criminal charge against the trio. The charges include conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, criminal negligence, and related offenses. According to the charge sheet, they allegedly failed to provide adequate security, crowd control measures, and medical facilities during a funfair event at the Islamic High School, leading to a stampede.
These offenses are punishable under Sections 308 and 344 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol. 11, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
