The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has voiced strong opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, describing them as a threat to national unity. Represented by his Deputy, Aminu Gwarzo, Yusuf articulated his stance during the 2025 New Year celebrations held at the Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa open theatre.
In a statement issued by the Deputy Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Shu’aibu, Yusuf criticized the tax reform bill as ineffective in addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges. “This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people,” Gwarzo stated.
The governor praised Kano residents for their resilience amid rising economic pressures but denounced the proposed reform as “ill-timed, lopsided, and detrimental to the country’s unity.” He urged the federal government to prioritize alleviating poverty and hunger, especially in the northern region, which continues to grapple with hyperinflation and insecurity.
Highlighting his administration’s achievements, Yusuf pointed to advancements in healthcare, education, road construction, and foreign scholarship programs. He also reminded citizens of the Supreme Court’s ruling in January 2024, which upheld his election as governor.
Meanwhile, the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN), has called on President Tinubu to institutionalize public accountability as a prerequisite for implementing tax reforms. In his New Year message, the Asagba emphasized that any additional economic burden on Nigerians would be unbearable.
“My New Year message is for a better life for Nigerians. We don’t want hardship of any kind in our system,” he said. “The government must cushion the effects of its policies. A prosperous economy should provide better education, improved healthcare, and hope for the younger generation. This will curb the ‘Japa syndrome’ and inspire citizens to build careers in Nigeria.”
While acknowledging that tax compliance is low across sectors, Azinge stressed that efficient use of taxpayers’ money is crucial to gaining public trust. “When people pay taxes, they expect the funds to be used judiciously. For meaningful tax reform, the government must demonstrate that taxpayers’ money will be managed effectively,” he added.
Addressing ongoing litigation regarding his ascension to the throne, Azinge expressed readiness to face his challengers in court.
“Asaba is democratic and accommodating. While many contenders sent congratulatory messages, one or two opted to go to court. That is their right, and we will engage them legally,” he stated.
Azinge was chosen from a pool of 10 candidates and officially presented with the Staff of Office by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on October 5, 2024.
