The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has given the Federal Government a seven-day deadline to implement the new national minimum wage and other benefits for judicial workers or face an indefinite strike.
In an emergency meeting on Wednesday, JUSUN expressed dissatisfaction over the government's failure to fulfill its commitments, despite an earlier 21-day ultimatum that was ignored. The union has now set February 19, 2025, as the final deadline for action, warning that failure to comply will result in an indefinite strike starting February 20.
JUSUN emphasized that judicial workers have been left behind while other public sector employees have received the revised pay.
“The meeting principally centered on the expiration of the twenty-one (21) day ultimatum issued to all Heads of Federal Courts, FCT Courts, and Judicial Bodies.
“After exhaustive deliberations, it was resolved that an additional seven (7) days’ notice is hereby given for the full implementation of the subject matter in line with relevant guidelines governing industrial disputes and the urgent intervention of the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun.
“The seven (7) days commence on Thursday, February 13, 2025, and end on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
“Failure to implement our demands within this stipulated time frame will mean the union cannot guarantee industrial harmony. Consequently, the strike will commence indefinitely from Thursday, February 20, 2025,” the statement read.
JUSUN has called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria to intervene urgently to prevent a nationwide judicial shutdown.
