A South African police sergeant, Ngudumane Hamlet Mahlalela, has been arraigned before the Protea Magistrates’ Court for allegedly shooting his wife, Jane Mashudu Mahlalela, on Valentine’s Day.
The tragic incident occurred on February 14, 2025, at their home in Protea Glen, Soweto. Reports indicate that the couple, both members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), had an argument regarding the deceased’s absence from home the previous night. Shortly after, family members reportedly heard a gunshot.
Following the shooting, the accused fled the scene with a minor child. He remained on the run until February 18, 2025, when he surrendered to Moroka SAPS. The child was later found at his aunt’s residence.
The court has postponed the case to February 25, 2025, for a formal bail application hearing.
