The Court of Appeal in Abuja has put a temporary hold on the enforcement of its January 10 judgment, which had upheld the Kano State Government’s decision to repeal the 2019 Emirate Council Law.
In its ruling on Friday, March 14, 2025, the court also set aside the Federal High Court’s June 20, 2024, order, which had nullified the Kano State Government’s actions under the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law 2024. These actions had included the dissolution of the five emirates created in 2019 and the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano.
This latest development means that the final decision on Sanusi’s reinstatement now rests with the Supreme Court, which is expected to make the ultimate pronouncement on the matter.
