A nursing student at Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Osato Edobor, is facing disciplinary action after allegedly recording and posting an "unauthorized" video on social media following the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Delta State.
In a letter dated March 27, 2025, and signed by the provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, the institution accused Edobor of engaging in a "malicious act" by filming herself singing and posting an "unofficial response" to a song during the First Lady’s arrival at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.
The event was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where 10,000 professional kits were distributed to midwives across the South-South geopolitical zone.
According to the letter, Edobor’s actions violated the institution’s Student Handbook, specifically under standardized disciplinary action for punishable offenses (No. 8, Page 21). The school has ordered her to submit a written explanation in triplicate within 24 hours, justifying why disciplinary action should not be taken against her.
The disciplinary action stems from a viral video in which nursing students at the event appeared to reject the First Lady as their “mother”.
The controversy unfolded when the event’s Master of Ceremony (MC) introduced Oluremi Tinubu as “everyone’s mother”, a customary title given to First Ladies in Nigeria. However, in a surprising turn, the students responded in unison:
"Na your mama be this" (This is your mother)
The reaction, which has since sparked widespread debate online, is being interpreted by many as a reflection of growing discontent over the economic hardship and insecurity under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The video has generated mixed reactions on social media. While some criticized the students for being disrespectful, others defended their response, citing frustration with the current economic situation in Nigeria.
As the controversy continues, all eyes are now on the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences to see how it handles the situation.
