A fire outbreak on Monday evening razed an electronic shop in Monday Market, Maiduguri, Borno State, destroying home appliances worth millions of naira. The affected shop belongs to Mohammed Abba Malam, Chairman of the Electronics Sellers Association.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 7 p.m. and quickly engulfed the shop. Responding to a distress call, the Borno State Police Command immediately deployed officers to the scene to prevent looting and assist in containing the blaze.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that the police played a crucial role in securing the area.
“The shop belongs to one Mohammed Abba Malam, the Chairman of the Electronics Sellers Association in Monday Market. Around 7 p.m., the Deputy Superintendent of Police of Dandal Division, Yakubu Muhammad, received a distress call from the market’s management about a fire outbreak,” Daso explained.
“The police were the first responders. They secured the area to prevent theft and promptly alerted the fire service. Working together, they managed to extinguish the flames.”
Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and only Malam’s shop was affected. However, the exact cause of the fire and the total value of the lost goods remain undetermined as investigations continue.
A trader in the market, Hassan Abdullahi, also confirmed that while no lives were lost, valuable electronics were destroyed before firefighters and security operatives managed to contain the situation.
A market source who arrived at the scene the following morning described the aftermath:
“I had already left the market before the fire started. But when I returned this morning, I saw the damage. While the fire has been put out, only the Chairman’s shop was affected.”
Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the cause of the fire and assess the total losses incurred.
