Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has reacted to his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing his commitment to fostering peace and stability despite the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Fubara’s statement came shortly after President Tinubu declared a State of Emergency in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of the governor, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly.
President Tinubu, in a national address on Tuesday, explained that his decision followed unsuccessful attempts to mediate the crisis, which he claimed was fueled by uncooperative factions. He cited Fubara’s alleged failure to restore peace, particularly after the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly on December 13, 2023, and the vandalization of oil pipelines in the region.
Additionally, Tinubu expressed frustration over the lack of collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government, which he said had stalled governance and hindered economic progress in the oil-rich state.
In his response, Governor Fubara reaffirmed his dedication to protecting lives, ensuring security, and promoting the development of Rivers State. He stressed that his administration had consistently acted in line with the rule of law and the constitution, prioritizing the well-being of Rivers people.
Fubara highlighted his efforts to implement peace agreements, including reintegrating commissioners who had previously resigned and swiftly complying with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the state’s budget. However, he expressed frustration over continued obstruction by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which, he argued, had made genuine peace difficult to achieve.
Addressing the people of Rivers State, Fubara urged calm and obedience to the law, assuring them that his administration remains focused on delivering good governance, sustaining development projects, and ensuring stability despite the current challenges.
“Even in the face of political tensions, we have remained committed to upholding the rule of law and putting the interests of our people first. Our focus remains on security, development, and the progress of Rivers State.”
Fubara reassured residents that his government will continue to engage relevant institutions to protect democracy and ensure Rivers State remains stable and prosperous.
