In celebration of the 88th birthday of former Nigerian President and Balogun of Owu, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom , Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola has inaugurated a newly constructed lawn tennis court named in his honor.
The court, officially titled “President Olusegun Obasanjo (GCFR) Tennis Court,” was commissioned as part of efforts to position Owu as a hub for recreation and tourism in Ogun State.
Olowu represented by the Asiwaju of Owu kingdom Chief Tony Ojeshina while Commissioning the lawn tennis court appreciated Aare Mayegun of Owu Kingdom, Chief Olanrewaju Kazeem Adeyanju Bakinson for his commitment to the development of Owu Kingdom.
The Monarch acknowledged his numerous contributions, particularly in the areas of sports and education describing the initiative as a testament to his dedication to community growth.
While speaking to newsmen, the Aare Mayegun of Owu Kingdom, Dr. Olanrewaju Kazeem Adeyanju Bakinson, who spearheaded the initiative through his foundation, Aare Bakinson Foundation, described the project as a way of giving back to the community.
“This is a payback time for my community in a recreational, spiritual, and sporting way. Our goal is to put Owu Club on the recreational map of Ogun State and make it a must-visit destination for visitors,” he said.
He highlighted the foundation’s commitment to youth development, education, and welfare adding that the foundation has sponsored WAEC and JAMB for students, as well as their training in various fields.
In addition to the lawn tennis court, the Owu Club also commissioned a mosque named after the Olowu of Owu, Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola, to enhance spiritual upliftment within the community.
Chief Olanrewaju added that plans are also underway for a 40-room hotel to further boost the area’s hospitality sector.
According to him “Baba is growing younger every day. He is very important to us, especially in Owu Kingdom, and we wish him more life and good health,” he stated.
Chief Adediran also spoke on the significance of the Balogun descendants forum in Owu history, referencing notable figures such as Balogun Adegbenro, Balogun Akin Olugbade, Balogun Matiku, Balogun Memunu, and Balogun Orisunmade, Balogun Egbeyemi, Balogun Olufakun.
“The Balogun title is rooted in warrior heritage. We are working on bringing all Balogun's together to strengthen unity and development in our kingdom.
"When our Balogun Obasanjo rides on his horse during events, other Balogun descendants should also join in to add glamour and tradition,” he added.
