President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm birthday wishes to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, praising his decades of service to Nigeria and his impact on the nation’s political evolution.
In a heartfelt tribute on Wednesday, Tinubu described Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” whose contributions to national development remain unforgettable. He acknowledged the former president’s frequent interventions in national affairs, noting that while sometimes controversial, they have played a crucial role in shaping policies and keeping leaders accountable.
President Tinubu highlighted Obasanjo’s pivotal role in Nigerian history, stating:
“Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story.”
He recalled Obasanjo’s key involvement in ending the Nigerian Civil War, emphasizing that as a colonel in the Nigerian Army, he received the instrument of surrender from Biafran Army Commander, Col. Philip Effiong, in 1970.
Tinubu also commended Obasanjo’s leadership following the assassination of General Murtala Muhammed in 1976, praising his dedication to democracy, which led to a peaceful transition to civilian rule in 1979.
Two decades later, in 1999, Obasanjo returned as a civilian president, playing a crucial role in restoring democracy, which has now endured for 25 years and counting.
Beyond his presidency, Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s influence in both national and global affairs, referring to him as an “ambassador of global peace and a troubleshooter” whose work in conflict resolution and governance advocacy has earned him respect across Africa and beyond.
While recognizing that Obasanjo’s interventions in national matters have often sparked debates, Tinubu noted that they have also shaped public policies and held leadership accountable.
The president praised Obasanjo’s commitment to national unity, peace, and progress, expressing gratitude for his contributions and praying for his continued health and wisdom.
“At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” Tinubu concluded.
