Popular Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has opened up about how leaving Mavin Records in 2018 shaped both his personal growth and music career.
The 31-year-old hitmaker, born Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon, made headlines when he parted ways with Don Jazzy’s iconic label, choosing not to renew his contract after several successful years under their wing.
Since going solo, Reekado admits his journey hasn’t been a smooth ride. In a recent interview on The Esther Oye Show, the Ozumba Mbadiwe crooner got candid about the highs, lows, and lessons learned post-Mavin.
“I don’t think I would have gained this much knowledge if I stayed. I would have felt too entitled, expecting success to come just because I was signed,” he shared.
The singer noted that being independent taught him the importance of accountability — a mindset shift that forced him to own both his wins and failures.
“Back then, if something didn’t work out, I’d probably blame the label. Now, I understand exactly what it takes to make things happen. I know what they did for me, and I truly appreciate it now.”
After exiting Mavin, Reekado briefly ventured into business partnerships, one of which he admitted didn’t pan out as expected.
“I partnered with someone, but it didn’t work out. Eventually, I decided to stand on my own,” he said.
That decision led him to found his own record label in 2024, taking full control of his music, image, and business.
“Right now, I’m in partnership with God,” he said with a smile.
