Tragedy struck in the Ayobo-Ipaja area of Lagos State as police confirmed the arrest of a man identified as Amos Daniel, also known by his cult alias, Gambit, for the gruesome murder of his girlfriend in a suspected money ritual plot.
According to the Lagos State Police Command, the chilling incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at a hotel in Ayobo, where Daniel had checked in earlier that evening with two of his friends. A young woman, later identified as Endurance, a native of Akwa Ibom State, joined them shortly after.
Eyewitnesses say a disturbing noise was heard from the hotel room around 10 PM, prompting suspicion among nearby guests. One of them, who gave his name simply as Adio, recounted the moment chaos began to unfold.
“I was in the room next door and heard strange noises. Another guest alerted security. When no one responded to repeated knocks, they used a spare key to open the door—and that’s when they saw the woman lying in a pool of blood,” Adio told Punch.
The horrifying discovery sent shockwaves through the hotel. By the time staff raised the alarm, Daniel’s accomplices had fled. But Daniel himself, unaware that the hotel staff had begun searching the premises, was spotted attempting to escape through the gate.
A staff member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the suspect was caught, beaten by onlookers, and handed over to the police. During the mob attack, Daniel reportedly confessed to plotting the ritual killing with his two friends.
“He said they had planned to use her for ritual purposes,” the source claimed.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday. He explained that the hotel manager had reported the case to Ayobo Police Station after hearing disturbing noises from the room. The manager also reportedly saw the bloodied body of the victim, prompting an immediate search and arrest of the suspect.
“A dagger suspected to have been used in the attack fell from Daniel as he was apprehended,” Hundeyin noted.
A preliminary investigation revealed the victim had been stabbed multiple times—in the stomach, head, and ribs. A search of the suspect’s belongings and hideout led to the recovery of various weapons and suspicious items, including: A UTC axe, Cutlass,Machete, Multiple jackknives, A pair of service jungle boots, Local sponge, Scissors, A laptop.
The victim’s body has been deposited at Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, for autopsy. The suspect, along with the recovered evidence, has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for a thorough investigation.
