Former Super Eagles coach Finidi George has shed light on his rapid transition to Rivers United, just days after resigning from his role as Nigeria’s head coach.
Finidi, who served as an assistant coach under Jose Peseiro before being promoted to head coach, experienced a challenging tenure. The Super Eagles drew against South Africa and suffered a defeat to the Benin Republic in World Cup qualifiers. These setbacks led to Finidi's resignation upon learning that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) intended to demote him and bring in a foreign technical adviser.
Shortly after his resignation, Finidi was appointed as the head coach of Rivers United. He explained that the club's approach was timely and that he regards Rivers United as one of the premier clubs in Nigeria and West Africa.
Finidi also highlighted Rivers United’s active recruitment efforts in preparation for the 2024/2025 season. The Port Harcourt-based club has signed about 10 players and, with no continental competitions this season, is focused on securing a top-three finish in the league.

I want to help the club grow and become a dominant force in Nigerian and African football,” Finidi shared in an exclusive interview with SportsBoom. “I’m happy with the project the club is looking at, and I see a lot of potential for growth and success. The vision of the club aligns with my own ambitions, and I believe we can achieve great things together. I’m excited about the project ahead.”
During his three-year stint at Enyimba International FC, Finidi won the NPFL title, and he aims to replicate that success with Rivers United.
