In a significant legal development, a High Court in Rivers State has issued an order preventing the All Progressives Congress (APC) from conducting its planned Ward, Local Government, and State Congresses in the state. The congresses were initially scheduled for October 11, 16, and 26, 2024.
This ruling comes in response to a legal action brought forward by Peter Ohochukwu and Haija Ndidi-Chukwuma, representing themselves and other elected executive members of the APC in Rivers State.
The plaintiffs also named the APC's national leadership, including Chairman Abdullahi Umar-Ganduje and Secretary Surajudeen Ojibola-Basiru, as well as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as defendants in the case.
The ex parte order, issued by the court in Port Harcourt, effectively halts the party's leadership from proceeding with the scheduled congresses until further notice. The legal battle reflects ongoing tensions within the APC in Rivers State, as party members seek to address internal disputes through the judiciary.
