The Commandant of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kwara State, Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, has proposed mandatory drug tests for all newly admitted university students as part of their admission process.
According to her, this measure would act as a preventative strategy, helping to identify and counsel students who may already be using drugs, thereby preventing them from becoming habitual users.
Hajia Abiola-Popoola shared this recommendation during a radio interview in Ilorin, expressing deep concern about the growing number of drug users in Nigeria.
She highlighted alarming statistics, stating, "A 2018 survey revealed that 14.3 million people in Nigeria are using drugs. One in seven Nigerians is a drug user, and one in four drug users is a woman.""This situation is particularly troubling," she continued, "because women play a crucial role in the family unit as primary caregivers and homemakers."
