Chelsea is in advanced negotiations to bring Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix back to Stamford Bridge for a deal valued at over £40 million, including add-ons.
Should an agreement be reached, Chelsea plans to revisit Conor Gallagher's potential transfer to Atletico Madrid. Felix, who joined Chelsea on loan during the second half of the 2022-23 season, netted four goals in 20 appearances for the club.
The 24-year-old Portuguese forward spent last season on loan at Barcelona but has since returned to Atletico. Chelsea aims to secure Felix's services for around £40 million, a move that could pave the way for Gallagher to finalize his switch to Atletico Madrid.
Gallagher, also 24, was close to joining Atletico this summer and even traveled to Madrid. However, the deal stalled due to complications surrounding Samu Omorodion's potential transfer to Chelsea.
The transfer hinges on Atletico generating funds by offloading either Omorodion or Felix after they spent £81 million to acquire Julian Alvarez from Manchester City earlier this week.
As a result, Gallagher returned to London with his future still uncertain.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca commented before Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, saying, "Conor is back. He is training separately from the rest of the squad."
