Chidozie Awaziem and Obinna Nwobodo played pivotal roles in FC Cincinnati's thrilling 4-2 comeback victory over New York City in gameweek two of the Leagues Cup.
Awaziem, who recently joined FC Cincinnati from Portugal’s Boavista, has already made a significant impact with two wins in his first two games for the club. The Super Eagles defender showcased a stellar defensive performance on his debut, helping FC Cincy secure a 1-0 victory over Querétaro on August 2.
Despite his impressive debut, coach Patrick Noonan opted to start Awaziem on the bench against New York City. Nwobodo, however, started the match, although Cincinnati found themselves trailing after the visitors scored in the 25th minute.
Awaziem was brought on at the start of the second half, but New York City extended their lead shortly after the hour mark due to a goalkeeper error. The tide began to turn for Cincinnati in the 79th minute when Pavel Bucha of the Czech Republic fired a low shot into the bottom corner, sparking the comeback.
Nwobodo assisted the second goal, with Argentine forward Yamil Rodrigo Assad delivering a spectacular strike. Awaziem then contributed an assist with a fine forward pass to Japan’s Yuya Kubo, who turned and scored to make it 3-2 for the Orange and Blues.
The victory was sealed in the 89th minute when Sergio Santos made a well-timed run and finish, capping off the comeback.
FC Cincinnati, who endured three straight defeats in July, have turned their fortunes around in August with the arrival of Awaziem, their new lucky charm. The club now sits with six points in their East 1 division, securing their place in the Leagues Cup Round of 32.
