Pedro Neto, one of Chelsea's latest signings, has been given a new jersey number following recent changes at the club. In an official announcement, Chelsea confirmed that Neto will now wear the number 7 jersey for the remainder of the 2024/2025 season, a shift from his initial number 19.
The number 7 jersey, previously worn by Raheem Sterling, became available after Sterling was moved away from the first-team squad. Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, explained the decision on Wednesday, revealing that both Sterling and Ben Chilwell are currently training separately from the main squad.
Maresca clarified his reasoning, stating, "I’ve been straightforward with Raheem. He’s a talented player, but I prefer a different style of winger. It’s that simple. I told him it would be challenging for him to get playing time here. The same goes for Chilly; they will both struggle for minutes with us.”
Neto, who joined Chelsea from Wolves, initially wore the number 19 shirt during Chelsea's recent match against Manchester City. Expressing his excitement about the move to Stamford Bridge, Neto shared,
"I’m really grateful to be part of this club. I’ve worked hard to reach this point in my career, and I’m looking forward to getting out on the pitch in this shirt."
In addition to Neto’s number change, the club has also confirmed that new signing Joao Felix will wear the number 14 jersey. Chelsea indicated that squad numbers could still change until the transfer window closes, suggesting possible further adjustments as the team finalizes its roster.
