The price of petrol in Kano State has skyrocketed to ₦950 per litre, leaving residents grappling with the impact of soaring fuel costs. This significant price hike comes in the wake of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest that took place nationwide.
Fuel marketers in the state have sharply increased their prices, leading commercial tricycle operators within Kano's metropolitan areas to double their fares. The sudden surge has placed additional strain on the daily lives of residents, many of whom are already struggling with the rising cost of living.
As the fuel crisis deepens, most filling stations in Kano city remain closed, exacerbating the situation. The few stations that are still operational have been inundated with long queues of vehicles as desperate motorists scramble to buy petrol. Before the recent protests, fuel prices at these stations ranged between ₦780 and ₦850 per litre. However, prices have now surged to between ₦900 and ₦950 per litre.
Black market operators have also seized the opportunity, selling petrol at exorbitant prices. According to reports, a litre of fuel on the black market is now being sold for between ₦1,100 and ₦1,200, depending on the location.
Motorists in Kano have expressed deep concern over the relentless rise in fuel prices, with many fearing that the situation could worsen if not addressed promptly.
Attempts to reach the state Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Alhaji Gana Girge, for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone calls did not connect.
