The remains of Nigeria’s former Senate President, Dr. Joseph Wayas, who passed away in London in November 2021, are set to be laid to rest in his hometown of Bassang, Obanliku LGA, Cross River State, on November 30, 2024. Dr. Dorn Cklaimz, Secretary of the central planning committee for the burial, confirmed that both the Federal Government and Cross River State Government have aligned on the funeral arrangements, which will include a ceremony at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

During a news briefing, Cklaimz noted that the remains of Wayas will be transported from the National Hospital in Abuja to Calabar with assistance from the Office of the Senate President. Following the Calabar service, his body will be taken by road to his final resting place in Bassang, a trip spanning over seven hours. Current Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed his deep respect for Wayas, praising his dedication to national unity and pledging his support for the funeral arrangements.

Due to the closure of the Bebi airstrip in Obanliku LGA since 2010, transporting the body from Calabar to Bassang has posed challenges. Options under consideration include a helicopter transfer or navigating the deteriorated northern Cross River roads. Chief Ekpenyong Effiong, a local commentator, observed that the rough road conditions add complexity to this final journey.

Governor Bassey Otu’s chief media aide, Gill Nsa, clarified the decision to hold the funeral in Calabar, given the anticipated attendance of numerous elderly dignitaries, including former presidents and governors, for whom the journey to Bassang would be taxing. Wayas’ remains were initially returned to Nigeria with the support of the “Who Is Who in Northern Cross River Forum” and Governor Otu, arriving at the National Hospital in Abuja on July 10, 2024.
