Olufemi Soneye, the Chief Corporate Communications Officer for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL), has decided to cancel his upcoming 50th birthday celebration following a tragic helicopter crash in the Niger Delta. Soneye, who turned 50 on October 29, had initially planned a celebration for November 2 but announced the cancellation during a worship service in Lagos as a mark of respect for those affected by the incident.
The helicopter accident, involving a Sikorsky SK76 operated by Eastwind Aviation, occurred on October 24 near Bonny Finima, off the coast of Calabar. The crash involved eight individuals, including six passengers and two crew members. So far, four bodies have been recovered, but the search for the helicopter’s black box, Flight Data Recorder (FDR), and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) remains ongoing due to difficult environmental conditions, according to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB).
In a heartfelt message, Soneye expressed deep regret, saying, “Dear Family and Friends, I have made the decision to cancel my 50th birthday celebration on November 2nd in light of the current national situation and the recent helicopter tragedy involving some of my colleagues. I apologize for any inconvenience, especially to those who have traveled from abroad.”
He further mentioned that a special “5 Hours of Praise” session led by Pastor Abbey Olusanya will still go ahead, offering a moment of reflection and support. Soneye extended his thoughts and prayers to the families affected by the tragedy, hoping for comfort and peace for all involved.
