Nigeria and Fulham stars Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey are confident that the Super Eagles' continued success on the international stage can attract more foreign-born players to represent Nigeria.
Iwobi and Bassey, key players for Nigeria, both played a pivotal role throughout the seven AFCON 2023 matches held in Ivory Coast, helping Nigeria reach the tournament’s final. Though eligible to play for other countries, the duo proudly chose to wear the green and white of the Super Eagles, and they hope their choice will inspire other Nigeria-eligible players abroad to follow suit.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Iwobi explained how trophy wins can enhance Nigeria's appeal for foreign talents. “Winning tournaments definitely draws more players,” Iwobi said. “Even though we lost in the final, if we keep progressing, it’ll attract players from England, Spain, and Germany to represent where they’re really from. Growing up in Nigerian culture, I felt connected and proud to play for Nigeria, and I think seeing me and Calvin do it will make others consider it too.”
Bassey also shared his experience, highlighting the warmth he’s received from Nigerians and encouraging other foreign-born players to explore their roots. “The love from Nigerians is unreal, and it’s not just from the fans but my family as well. Growing up in the UK with African traditions, going back feels natural,” he explained. “It’s important to learn about where you’re from, whether you end up playing for Nigeria or not. When I’m there, it feels like home.”
Both Iwobi and Bassey have consistently been part of Marco Silva’s lineup at Fulham, where their teamwork has helped lift the team to 10th place in the English Premier League this season.
