Edo State's newly sworn-in Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has shared an extraordinary account of the challenges he faced during his campaign, attributing his victory entirely to God and the people of Edo State.
Speaking at a Thanksgiving Service held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, Okpebholo revealed his unwavering faith amid the election battle, contrasting his approach with that of his opponents. “While others relied on TV appearances and social media campaigns, I put my trust in God, and He granted me victory,” he said.
According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo recounted a striking incident that happened just after his election win. On Sunday morning, he discovered a dead bat on his bed. Okpebholo interpreted this as a sign of divine intervention, explaining that he had not sought help from any diviners or traditional sources during the campaign, choosing instead to rely on his faith.
Reflecting on his campaign journey, Okpebholo said, “A few days to the election, as I praised God, others mocked me. They said, ‘What is he doing?’ as they stayed on TV and social media. But I listened to God’s voice and entrusted my journey to Him.”
Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the religious leaders who supported him in prayer and encouraged Edo residents to remain steadfast in their faith. “When I found that bat, I didn’t fire any arrow—the spirit of God fought the battle for me. I am grateful to everyone who believed that with God, all things are possible,” he concluded. “My advice to you all: trust in God alone, for He is the ultimate deliverer.”
