Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has presented a proposed budget of N549.16 billion for 2025 to the Kano State Assembly. The budget, comprising N312.6 billion for capital projects and N236.5 billion for recurrent expenses, aims to maintain a 57:43 capital-to-recurrent expenditure ratio, focusing heavily on social and economic development.
Governor Yusuf outlined key allocations, with education receiving the largest share at N168.35 billion (31%), followed by health at N90.6 billion (16.5%), and infrastructure development at N70.68 billion (12.87%). Agriculture is set to receive N21.04 billion (3.83%), while manufacturing, commerce, industry, and tourism will be allocated N3.89 billion (1.22%). Funds have also been earmarked for environmental sanitation (N15.52 billion) and governance (N98.24 billion).
The governor reported a solid 77% performance for the 2024 budget of N437.3 billion, with notable revenue increases attributed to measures taken to prevent financial leakages. However, Yusuf acknowledged the challenging economic climate in 2024, marked by rising costs and exchange rate volatility, which led to nationwide protests.
Reflecting on the impact of these economic challenges on Kano’s youth, Governor Yusuf stressed the importance of supporting young people through targeted programs, noting that a lack of youth engagement could have serious consequences.
