The Lagos State Taskforce has apprehended four suspected traffic robbers notorious for targeting motorists during rush-hour gridlocks across the city.
The suspects, identified as Ismail Akinlade (26), Rasak Abiodun (25), Adefabi Gbolahan (25), and Rilwan Olaloye (20), were arrested in the Mushin area following a meticulous investigation that led officers to their hideout.
In a statement, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, Director of Press and Public Affairs for the Taskforce, disclosed that the team had been monitoring criminal activities in specific areas of the state. He noted, “These individuals reportedly target distracted motorists, stealing phones, bags, and other valuables from vehicles while diverting their victims’ attention.”
During interrogation, one of the suspects, Akinlade, confessed, “Whenever I steal, I give the phone to the Number One (now at large) at Mushin, who handles selling our loot. After a while, we return for the cash proceeds, which we spend on drugs and gambling.” He added that bad road conditions provided opportunities for their attacks, as motorists were forced to slow down at damaged sections.
The Agency’s Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, explained that officers had traced a stolen phone to the Idi-Oro axis in Mushin, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
“They have all been interrogated and will be charged to court immediately. I urge others involved in such crimes to desist or face a similar fate,” Akerele warned.
