A Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer suffered severe injuries after being set on fire by a commercial bus driver and his conductor while enforcing traffic rules in the Cele area near Mile 2. The attackers allegedly doused the officer with petrol during a violent altercation in an attempt to evade arrest for a traffic violation.
According to a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the incident, captured in a shocking video, shows the driver of a Volkswagen T4 bus with license plate LSD 355 CK pouring petrol on the officer before setting him ablaze. The confrontation reportedly took place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, as LASTMA officials stopped the bus for a traffic offense. Instead of complying, the driver and his conductor turned hostile, resulting in the brutal assault.
The injured officer, who sustained serious burns, was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. LASTMA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order and safety on Lagos roads, as mandated by the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
The agency stressed the importance of respecting traffic regulations and LASTMA personnel, warning that violent acts against officers will not be tolerated and that appropriate legal actions will be taken against the perpetrators.
