The Enugu State Police Command has successfully apprehended two suspects linked to the gruesome murder of Mr. Stephen Aniagu, chairman of the Ogbete Market Traders Association.
Mr. Aniagu was tragically shot dead on September 14, 2024, in the Topland area of Enugu State. Confirming the arrests on Friday, November 15, the state’s police spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, revealed that a coordinated operation by the Anti-Robbery Section (D9) and the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad led to the capture of the suspects on November 8 and 9, 2024.
The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Chukwudi Aboshi from Ikwo LGA, Ebonyi State, and Ani Innocent Ebuka (also known as "Excellent") from Nkanu East LGA, were apprehended in Akwuke, Awkunanaw, within Enugu South LGA.
During interrogation, the suspects admitted to their roles in the attack on Mr. Aniagu, detailing how they fatally shot him, stole his vehicle, and targeted another male driver at the same location, shooting him multiple times and stealing his Toyota Corolla. Fortunately, the second victim survived and is receiving medical care.
The suspects further disclosed their involvement in numerous other crimes and identified their hideout as a forest in Mmaku, Awgu LGA. They also named other gang members still at large, including Obinna Nnamani, Miracle (nicknamed "C-C" or "White"), Okoro Chisom, Pius Anoja (a.k.a "Ezeobo"), and others from various communities in Enugu State.
Recovered items include a stolen Tecno Android phone and objects suspected to be charms. The police are intensifying efforts to apprehend the remaining gang members and recover stolen items.
Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, reaffirmed the commitment of the Enugu State Police Command to eradicating criminal activities and ensuring justice for victims. He expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Mba for his unwavering support to law enforcement agencies in the state.
