Wike: Nigerians Need to See Results Before Paying Taxes Willingly-OXYGIST

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has emphasized that Nigerians are more likely to pay their taxes if they can see clear benefits and improvements funded by those taxes. Wike stated that tax compliance hinges on citizens witnessing their contributions at work, as he spoke following an inspection of the Kuje township road dualization project in Abuja.

Wike clarified that ongoing infrastructure projects in the FCT are funded by Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), showcasing a commitment to prudently utilizing resources to benefit the community. “No government can claim to have all the resources needed to meet every need, but it is vital to ensure everyone contributes by paying their taxes,” Wike noted.

He further explained, “Nigerians are willing to pay taxes when they see positive outcomes from their contributions. However, if there’s nothing to show for it, reluctance sets in.”

Highlighting his administration’s approach to resource management, Wike pointed out that careful planning and efficient use of funds were essential for both completed and ongoing projects. He added that the FCTA is actively working to boost its IGR to better serve residents, promising continued development driven by transparency and accountability.
