Paul Ibe, spokesperson for the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has suggested that both Atiku and Peter Obi have reflected on their experiences in the last general election and are considering joining forces to oust the current administration.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today program, Ibe emphasized the importance of unity between opposition parties, stating that it is the only viable way to remove the “incompetent and clueless” government of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi collectively garnered over 12 million votes in the 2023 presidential election. Despite their combined efforts, APC’s Bola Tinubu emerged victorious with over eight million votes.
Obi, once a loyal PDP member and Atiku’s ally, left the party for the Labour Party (LP) after realizing he would not secure the PDP’s presidential ticket. Many analysts believe that a united front between the PDP and LP could have unseated the APC in the 2023 elections.
According to Ibe, the challenges faced during the 2023 election have prompted both leaders to reconsider their strategies moving forward. He stated:
“Nigerians deserve better than what they are getting. It’s never been this bad in this country, and there is no hope. Atiku Abubakar has always championed the need for opposition parties to work together. Lessons have been learned by all parties, including Atiku and Obi, and this time, they are determined to move forward in unity.”
While hinting at ongoing discussions between Atiku and Obi, Ibe stressed that all options remain open for the former vice president. However, he refrained from confirming whether Atiku would step aside for Obi in the 2027 presidential election.
