Femi Adesina, the former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has praised the former leader as a true "friend of the masses," attributing his decisions and policies in office to a deep concern for ordinary Nigerians.
In a heartfelt tribute marking Buhari’s 82nd birthday on December 17, Adesina reflected on the former president’s leadership style and commitment to the welfare of the people. He highlighted Buhari’s decision to uphold the fuel subsidy as a testament to his compassion and understanding of the struggles faced by everyday Nigerians.
Discussing the controversial subsidy issue, Adesina wrote, “The removal of fuel subsidy was the Big Elephant in the room. The government was fully aware of the drain it posed on the economy, but Buhari insisted on retaining it. Why? For the sake of the ordinary people.”
Adesina recounted Buhari’s reasoning during high-level discussions, quoting him as saying, “When oil prices were soaring, reaching $140 per barrel, what did the average Nigerian benefit? Nothing. So why should they shoulder the burden when prices fall?”
Describing the former president as "Ore Mekunu," a Yoruba term meaning "friend of the poor," Adesina noted that this empathy-driven leadership still endears Buhari to people, even in his retirement. “He didn’t want to take any action that could destabilize society or harm the ordinary citizen,” Adesina added, explaining how Buhari often stood apart from other political leaders on the subsidy issue during his tenure.
Nearly two years after leaving office, Buhari’s connection with the masses remains strong. “Even in retirement, he continues to draw people to him like a magnet,” Adesina remarked, celebrating the lasting impact of Buhari’s legacy as a leader who prioritized the welfare of the underprivileged.
