Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has commended the Lagos State government for its steadfast commitment to enhancing security across the state. Speaking at the Lagos State Security Trust Fund's 18th Annual Town Hall Meeting on Security, Egbetokun highlighted the significant strides made in crime reduction, crediting robust government support for security agencies.
The IGP revealed that since 2007, only one bank robbery has been successful in Lagos, with the last incident occurring in 2014. He declared that the era of armed and bank robberies in the state is effectively over.
“There was a time when armed robberies and bank heists were rampant in Lagos. However, I can confidently say that, since 2007, only one bank robbery has succeeded, and that was as far back as 2014. Those days are behind us,” Egbetokun stated.
He emphasized Lagos’s unique challenges as a cosmopolitan hub and a destination for internal migration, which necessitates continuous adaptation and strengthening of security strategies.
At the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed the state’s dedication to bolstering security by donating over 250 brand-new patrol vehicles, advanced hardware, communication gadgets, and protective gear to the police.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also announced plans to integrate drone technology into the state’s security framework to enhance monitoring and crime prevention.
“Lagos has been comprehensively mapped through the EGIS component of our digitalization efforts. Drone technology will be deployed strategically to monitor waterways, densely populated areas, and other key zones. This will allow for real-time area monitoring, crowd management, and traffic assessments, enabling timely responses to incidents,” Sanwo-Olu explained.
